Decay Prevention

Tooth decay, also known as cavities, are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that result in holes. Cavities and tooth decay are among the world’s most common health problems.

What causes tooth decay?

Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), are left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids. This causes plaque to form on the teeth. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, creating holes in the teeth.

How to prevent tooth decay:

  • Brush your teeth at least two times per day.
  • Use dental floss to clean between your teeth at least once per day.
  • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to maintain oral health.
  • Visit your dentist once every 6 months for a professional cleaning and oral exam.
